What are exosomes, and why are they important for skin and hair regeneration?

Homologous exosomes are small extracellular vesicles or tiny packages of protein, RNA, lipids, growth factors and other molecules released by stem cells in the body. Due to their similarities in molecular composition and origin, they are well-suited for applications in medicine, such as biomarkers, drug delivery, immunotherapy, regenerative medicine, and therapeutic agents.  

As we age, our regenerative capacity declines because we have less stem cells and exosomes, therefore, obtaining exosomes from birth tissue is a valuable source. 

Umbilical cord tissue exosomes contain 30 types of collagen, compared to PRP's 3 types and bone marrow's 8 types, therefore, UCT exosomes excel in migrating cellular information.

How do UCT exosomes promote skin and hair regeneration?

  1. Anti-Inflammatory Effects: The components within umbilical cord exosomes may possess anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce inflammation at the injury site and create a conducive environment for healing.
  2. Stimulation of Stem Cells: Exosomes may activate resident stem cells in the skin and hair follicles, leading to enhanced tissue repair and regeneration.
  3. Extracellular Matrix Remodeling: Exosomes can facilitate the remodeling of the extracellular matrix, which is crucial for skin structure and integrity, thereby supporting regeneration.
  4. Angiogenesis Promotion: By promoting angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), these exosomes can improve nutrient and oxygen supply to damaged tissues, further aiding in regeneration.
  5. Cell Communication: Exosomes enhance intercellular communication, which can coordinate the regenerative processes among various cell types involved in skin and hair growth.
